Eating in Alignment

I used to think of food as fuel. Calories in, energy out. It is a neat idea, but it leaves out most of what happens at the table.

For years I lived mostly in my head and my spirit. I read, I prayed, I thought things through. This year I decided to pay a different kind of attention to the body, and food was where I started. That's when I truly saw what eating is really about, on a soul level.

Why alignment

Diet culture emphasises discipline. Give up this, deny that, earn your dinner. This is good.

Eating in alignment is you asking "Do what I eat, how I eat and why I eat, all point the same way as my body, mind and soul, not just body?" When they do, the work is practically done.

The body

The body is the shepherd of the three. It knows where the water is. It tells you when you are hungry, when you are full, when something sits well and when it does not. Most of us have trained ourselves not to hear it. We eat by the clock, by the rules, or by whatever is on the screen.

So start by listening. Before a meal, ask what you actually need. Something warm? Something light? Then notice how you feel afterwards. Over time you learn which foods leave you steady and which leave you foggy. That is not purity. It is simply knowing yourself.

The mind

The mind is the bridge between body and soul. It carries messages in both directions. When it is clear, it translates what the body needs into something the soul can make sense of. When it is cluttered with rules, the bridge is blocked.

"Good" food and "bad" food, "clean" and "dirty", "I was so bad today." That language turns every meal into a verdict on your character. Try curiosity instead. What was I really hungry for? Sometimes the answer is food. Sometimes it is rest, company or comfort. Naming the real need is not a failure of discipline. It is self-knowledge.

The soul

Food was never only nutrition. In Yoruba homes, as in most places, it is hospitality, memory and belonging.

To feed the soul, we give the meal its meaning back. Pause before you eat and give thanks, even for a breath. Cook now and then as an act of love rather than a chore. Share a table when you can and let it stregthen your body-mind-soul (BMS) alignment.

A week to try

You do not need to change your whole life. For one week:

  1. Check in before you eat. Ask what your BMS needs and what is driving the choice.

  2. Honour that choice.

  3. Mark each meal with intention.

  4. After your meal, explore the meal further.

  5. Watch your life bloom.

Coming home

Eating in alignment is not about eating to look good (which is obviously not a bad reason). It is moreso about coming home to yourself with a body that's heard, a mind that's clear and a soul that's honoured. Eating becomes a sacred action, consecrated for your holiness.

Happy Wholeness 🎈
